Two jailed after man set alight at Manchester party

Brown and Foley admitted grievous bodily harm

Two men who set fire to their friend in a drunken prank at a student party have been jailed.

Jack Brown, 20, and Rohan Foley, 21, covered Glenn Collins with rum and set him alight while he slept at the party at a Manchester flat in June.

The pair admitted causing grievous bodily harm and were sentenced at Manchester Crown Court on Friday.

Foley was jailed for 14 months and Brown was sentenced to 14 months at a young offenders' institute.

Mr Collins, 19, from Skelmersdale, was treated for severe burns to his upper body and will be scarred for life.

The court heard how Foley and Mr Collins were friends who studied at the University of Chester.

'Moment of madness'

The pair travelled to Manchester with a group of friends to celebrate Foley's 21st birthday and stayed at a flat on Berry Street in the city centre.

Brown, a friend of Foley, also went to the party on 9 June.

Greater Manchester Police said Mr Collins was set alight in the early hours of the following day.

Det Con Emma Taylor said: "Rohan effectively ruined his own birthday party after the pair caused life-changing injuries to the victim.

"This may well have been a prank that went wrong in a drink-fuelled moment of madness, and the pair may not have wanted to cause any harm, but their reckless actions have had devastating consequences."

She added: "Needless to say this case sends a strong message about the dangers of alcohol particularly spirits, which are highly flammable.

"Both of these men came to this country to better themselves and now they have been sent to custody, where they will have plenty of time to think about their act of utter stupidity against a friend."
