Twelve people were evacuated from their homes during the night after a large fire broke out at a riverside office block in west London.

Ten fire engines and more than 70 firefighters were called the blaze at the Strand-On-The-Green in Chiswick shortly after midnight.

The building's first floor and roof were badly affected by the blaze, which was under control by 04:40 GMT.

Firefighters were at the scene damping down on Sunday.

'Challenging conditions'

Station manager Carl St Paul said: "Our crews worked extremely hard in challenging conditions to get this fire under control and to stop it from spreading to neighbouring properties."

Crews from Acton, Chiswick, Richmond, Heston, Ealing, Kingston, Kensington, Southall and Hammersmith fire stations attended the fire.

The cause is under investigation.
