CCTV images have been released of a man police want to trace over the fatal stabbing of a woman in east London.

Mariana Popa, 24, from Romania, was found in Ilford Lane, Ilford, near the junction with Loxford Lane, at 00:15 GMT on 29 October. She had been working as a prostitute.

She was taken to hospital where she died from a stab wound to the chest.

The CCTV images, captured before and after the attack, show a man officers believe may hold crucial information.

The man is described as dark skinned, with a full beard, wearing a light baggy top with a satchel across his chest. It is thought he may have been wearing a hat or cap at the time of the offence.

Det Ch Insp Sheila Stewart said: "It is vital we track down this man who was in the precise area at the time Mariana was attacked and killed.

"I would urge anyone with information about this man, or any other aspect of the investigation, to get in touch with us as soon as possible. All calls will be treated with the utmost confidence."
