Two men have been arrested in connection with the shooting of two men during an attempted robbery in east London.

A man in his 50s is critically ill and his colleague, aged in his 40s, is said to be in a stable condition.

The men were attacked outside the Show Supermarket in Plaistow on Thursday night.

A Met Police spokesman said officers believe an attempted robbery took place at the store before the shooting.

The ages of the men arrested are not yet known and they are being questioned at a police station in east London.

The store's owner is believed to be one of those who was shot.

A man who did not want to be identified said he had known him for more than 10 years.

He described him as a "very nice guy, a gentleman, very generous".
