Pedestrian dies after car leaves Godstone Road in Purley

A pedestrian has died after being hit by a car which left the road in the early hours in south London.

The 40-year-old woman was pronounced dead at the scene on Godstone Road, Purley, at 05:00 GMT.

A man who was with her was taken to hospital with a shoulder injury. Three people who were in the car are being treated for non-serious injuries.

The 25-year-old driver has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.

The car, a red Citroen Saxo, was travelling in the direction of Purley prior to the collision.

Godstone Road between Downs Court Road and the Whyteleafe Hill roundabout has been closed while police investigate the incident.
