Met Police morale low and decreasing, staff survey finds

Only a third of Metropolitan Police (Met) staff would feel confident of receiving a good service if they approached the force as a member of the public, a staff survey has revealed.

It found satisfaction and morale levels in the Met were low and decreasing.

The survey showed 47% of staff agreed they were "satisfied with their current job", the lowest level since 2007.

The Met said this was "the most challenging aspect" of the audit, which was completed by 25% of its staff.

In total 13,379 of the force's 53,710 employees completed the survey.

'Impact on service'

The audit comes as the Met is about to reveal how it will make cuts of £500m. The force has already said it plans to sell its New Scotland Yard HQ.

The survey said the low job satisfaction level, coupled with low scores for motivation and work environment, "indicates that morale is currently low across the organisation, and may be having a detrimental impact on the quality of our service delivery".

The percentage of staff who agreed they were treated with fairness and respect also fell to 52%, a 10% drop over the past four surveys.

The survey revealed staff had more confidence in their line manager than the leadership provided by senior management.

Only 19% of respondents agreed the decisions taken by senior management were "based on true evaluation of what is best for the organisation and the communities".

Former Met Commissioner Lord Stevens said the cuts were not the only reason for low morale.

"If you take people along with you and get them involved in the decisions and let them understand what it's all about, I think then you will get their support," he said.

John Tully, chairman of the Metropolitan Police Federation, said: "When you are making such massive changes to workforces, such as the commissioner is driving through at the moment, you have to take your workforce with you.

"I don't think the rank and file are with the commissioner at the moment, not for anything he's done but for the general circumstances we find ourselves in."
