Pedestrian hit by police motorcycle in Ilford dies

An elderly woman died when she was struck by a City of London police motorcyclist in east London.

The pedestrian, believed to be in her 70s, was pronounced dead at the scene of the incident in Ilford which happened at 10:30 BST.

The officer was taken by air ambulance to the Royal London Hospital with serious chest and arm injuries.

He was part of a police escort to a convoy of 110 taxis taking underprivileged children to Southend.

It is understood that the children were not aware of the incident.

An investigation has been launched by the Metropolitan Police.
