Charing Cross fire disrupts Tube services

Rush hour services on the London Underground were severely disrupted after a fire at a Tube station.

Cables were damaged in the fire in a signal room at Charing Cross station just after 03:30 BST, London Fire Brigade (LFB) said.

Contractors carrying out engineering work were evacuated from the station.

A section of the Northern and Bakerloo lines were suspended causing severe disruption. A full service has resumed on both lines.

Howard Collins, London Underground's chief operating officer, said there was a small fire at the station that was quickly put out.

He said: "As a precaution and due to our high safety standards, contractors working at Charing Cross, who were engaged in work to upgrade the line, were required to leave the station.

"We apologise to passengers who are affected and we are working hard to restore a full service across both lines as soon as possible."
