London riots: Peckham 'Wall of Love' to be preserved

A "Wall of Love" made up of messages posted in Peckham, south London, after the riots is to be preserved.

Hundreds of people hit back at rioters with the peaceful Post-it notes of support which transformed a boarded-up shopfront in Rye Lane.

The goodwill messages, left on the Poundland store which was targeted by looters on Monday night, read "We love Peckham because..."

They will be preserved at nearby Peckham library for the public to view.

'Pride and respect'

Southwark Council said it hoped the wall would continue to act as a rallying point for the local community.

People are still able to add messages, before the wall is covered in clear plastic and preserved for future generations.

Council leader Peter John, said: "One ray of hope from the terrible events of the last week has been the incredible community spirit displayed by local people and businesses and their determination to not give in to the criminals who tried to destroy our neighbourhoods.

"Few things symbolise this spirit better than Peckham's Wall of Love - an impromptu outpouring of pride and respect in our local community.

"While we all face some serious challenges in the months ahead, I hope by displaying the wall in our library we can continue to show the world that Peckham has a great future ahead of it."
