An air stewardess has been jailed after being caught smuggling cocaine in her underwear.

Elphia Dlamini, 42, hid £120,000 worth of the drug in her bra and knickers but was stopped during a random search with sniffer dogs at Heathrow Airport.

The South African Airways employee was jailed for seven years at Isleworth Crown Court on Friday.

Earlier Dlamini pleaded guilty to importation of drugs at Uxbridge Magistrates' Court.

'Abuse her position'

The sniffer dog - a springer spaniel known as Clever Trevor - stopped Dlamini, who lives in Cape Town, on 26 June as the crew was undergoing checks, the UK Border Agency said.

She had hid 3kg of the drugs in her undergarments.

Peter Avery, assistant director at the agency's criminal and financial investigations directorate, said: "This drug smuggling attempt is particularly serious because this woman has sought to abuse her position, thinking the UK Border Agency would pay less attention to airline and airport staff.

"This case shows that there is no one type of drug smuggler and we have got our eye on everyone coming into and out of the UK."
