Ten people have been arrested in a crackdown on a gang suspected of stealing rail cable worth more than £1.2m.

About 90 British Transport Police officers raided 10 properties in Grantham, Lincoln, Newark, Doncaster and Wellingborough early on Wednesday.

A number of items were seized including cutting tools, mobile phones, computers and bank statements.

A force spokesman said it was part of a seven-month investigation by officers.

Det Insp Stuart Mellish said the cable theft was disrupting the lives of ordinary people.
