Lincoln City Football Club's youth team faces closure after the club missed out on £50,000 of funding.

The academy lost a large part of its funding following Lincoln City's relegation from the Football League two years ago.

Since then, club director Roger Bates said it has struggled to bring in income and the funding gap has widened.

The club is now asking for fans and businesses to help keep the youth team running.

It has launched the Future Imps Fund to give people a chance to invest in the academy. Mr Bates said he was looking at how the club might reward contributors.

Over the years, the youth team has had a successful track record of producing players for the first team and of selling young players to Premier League clubs such as Liverpool, Aston Villa and Birmingham City.

Head of Youth at the club Grant Brown said: "We are determined to continue to operate a youth academy at Lincoln City Football Club."
