Lincolnshire sees record road grit use

A record breaking amount of salt has been used on Lincolnshire's roads this so far winter.

The county council said it has already used 25,000 tonnes - the most since it began keeping records.

Officials said the long winter, combined with damp ground left over from the summer rains, meant roads had to be retreated more often.

An extra 9,000 tonnes of salt - imported from Egypt - is being delivered to the council this weekend.

Richard Fenwick, from Lincolnshire County Council Highways, said: "We still have about 10,000 tonnes in store so we don't anticipate using all of that and the new delivery.

"But we have used such a lot this winter it is better to be safe and it will be handy to have a good amount ready to use next winter."
