A 74-year-old man who repeatedly raped a young girl and indecently assaulted another has been jailed for 19 years.

Benjamin Rodgers, of Hagbeach Gate in Whaplode, Lincolnshire, raped the girl over a five-year period which started when she was 11, Lincoln Crown Court heard.

He had previously been convicted of serious sexual offences and spent seven years in prison in the 1990s.

Recorder John Pini said Rodgers had carried out "a campaign of rape".

Mr Pini told Rodgers: "You are a thoroughly evil and manipulative man. What you did was depraved and quite wicked.

"This can only be described as a campaign of rape.

"It may be that you end your days behind bars. If that should happen it is simply the inevitable consequences of the fact that you have evaded justice for most of your life."

Rodgers, a former lorry driver, was found guilty of three charges of rape and six charges of indecent assault committed against two victims between 1973 and 2002.

He had denied the offences.
