Bank slip in Lincolnshire affects train services

Engineers were sent to the bridge to assess the damage

Part of a railway bridge has collapsed in Lincolnshire, disrupting train services between Nottingham and Grantham.

Network Rail said a retaining wall had come down at Allington, five miles from Grantham, following a bank slip.

Trains between Nottingham and Skegness will now start and terminate at Grantham with a replacement bus service between Nottingham and Grantham.

Network Rail hopes services will be restored by Sunday morning.

It said the collapse had been caused by very heavy rain.

Phil Verster, route managing director for Network Rail, said: "I apologise to East Midlands Trains passengers who have been inconvenienced by this damage.

"Our engineers are working around the clock to rebuild the embankment."

East Midlands Trains said services between Liverpool and Norwich would not stop at Grantham in either direction.

It said passengers from Grantham could use replacement bus services to connect with the Liverpool to Norwich line in Nottingham.

A spokesman said: "Network Rail engineers are on site working hard to repair the bridge and reopen the line."
