Arson spree in Gainsborough prompts witness plea

A series of arson attacks in a matter of hours has left a Lincolnshire community "shocked", according to the authorities.

Fire crews attended seven incidents in Gainsborough on Thursday evening, including an attack on a play area.

Straw bales were stacked up against a play shed on Riseholme Road, with the flames destroying the structure and killing two chicken kept there.

Other incidents included grass fires and items burnt at a building site.

'Significant cost'

The county council, fire service and police have appealed for help in tracking down the culprits.

Arson task force manager, Steve Wright, said: "We know these incidents are all linked due to their timings and locations on a route through Gainsborough.

"The community is shocked at these crimes, particularly because much-loved children's facilities were targeted.

"It is rare to have a string of deliberate incidents like this in Lincolnshire, but when it does happen, it can be at significant cost to individuals, businesses and the community."
