M1 southbound in Leicestershire shut after fatal four-car crash

The M1 southbound has been closed at junction 21A because of a four-car pile-up in which a woman died.

The crash happened at about 08:00 BST near the junction with the A46, Leicestershire police said.

The woman, who was the passenger in a Ford Anglia, died at the scene. The Anglia driver and a passenger in a Ford Ka were taken to hospital with serious injuries.

A 30-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the incident.

The road has since reopened.

Derbyshire cricketers were caught up in the tailbacks, delaying the start of the cup match away to Leicestershire.

Det Con Kath Orr appealed for witnesses and asked drivers to avoid the area.
