A woman fighting plans to close a dementia ward has launched a campaign against the proposals including an online petition.

Ward 4 at Coalville Community Hospital, in Leicestershire, provides inpatient and day care respite services.

Lesia Argent, who cares for her husband Joe, has written to the prime minister and got more than 400 signatures.

NHS Leicestershire Partnership Trust said it planned to bring its services for patients closer to their homes.

The 18-bed specialist unit, used by in-patients who do not need intense levels of care but still require hospital support, could close by October if plans are approved.

Mrs Argent said the closure would make carers "desperate for help".

"Having a few hours a day to myself is a great help and I know he's coming back home to me so I can look after him," she said.

"Bringing a carer into the home isn't going to have any benefit for us carers, we need some time to ourselves... these people have no common sense."

The trust said it had proposed the closure because the ward was underused by in-patients following improvements to its community services.

It also has plans to introduce specialist teams into other community hospitals.

Rachel Bilsborough, divisional director of community health services for the trust, said the trust would be reviewing Mr and Mrs Argent's care package before any changes were made.
