Family 'disowned' man over sex abuse

27 August 2013 Last updated at 20:13 BST

A man who was sexually abused 36 years ago said his family has disowned him after he spoke out about his attacker.

Joga Singh, 53, was sentenced to nine-and-a-half years in prison at Leicester Crown Court on Tuesday after he pleaded guilty to two counts of serious sexual assault in 1977.

His victim, who cannot be identified for legal reasons, said sex abuse victims in the Asian community do not go to the police because of fear, shame and family honour.

Eleanor Garnier reports for East Midlands Today.
