A New York taxi driver has blamed a cyclist for causing him to mount a kerb, severing part of a British woman's leg.

Sian Green, 24, from Leicester, had her left leg amputated below the knee after the accident in Manhattan on Tuesday.

Taxi driver Mohammed Fasyal Himon, who said he was "very sorry", has launched a medical fund for Ms Green.

Police said the crash was still being investigated and the cyclist involved had not been charged.

Mr Himon said: "I am praying for her and her family. But it is not my fault. It is just an accident.

"This is what cab drivers have to deal with every day.

"It could have happened to any of us."

Mr Himon, who launched the fund for Ms Green with the New York State Federation of Taxi Drivers, claimed the cyclist had pounded on his car and yelled at him.

Plumber praised

Ms Green was assisted by Mehmet Oz, a US celebrity doctor who was filming in the area.

He later praised plumber Dave Justino on Twitter for his "quick thinking" in tying his belt around Ms Green's leg.

Ms Green has been recovering from surgery at Bellevue Hospital.

Dr Spiros Frangos, a senior trauma surgeon at the hospital, said replanting her left leg had not been an option given its condition.

He said she was "likely" to regain the use of her right leg, which had "sustained multiple deep lacerations".

"Ms Green has remained optimistic despite the difficult circumstances and is very fortunate to have such a loving and supportive family," he added.

Ms Green's parents, Jason and Sonia Green, said in a statement: "We would especially like to thank everyone at the initial scene of the accident, especially David Justino and Dr Oz, (and) all the emergency services personnel at the scene who came to our daughter's aid."
