Sikh temple attack: Man appears in court

A 26-year-old man has been remanded in custody in connection with an attack on a Sikh religious leader in Leicester.

Sri Satguru Uday Singh Ji, described by police as worldwide spiritual head of the Namdhari community, was assaulted at the Gurdwara Namdhari Temple.

Harjit Singh Toor, 26, from Woods Close, Oadby, Leicestershire, appeared at Leicester Magistrates Court charged with attempted murder.

He is due to appear at Leicester Crown Court later this month.

Mr Toor is also charged with making threats in a public place with an axe.

Following the attack in Spinney Hill early on Sunday, Sri Satguru Uday Singh Ji was treated at the Leicester Royal Infirmary for his injuries and later discharged.
