Man hit by lorry on M1 died at the scene

A man died when he was hit by a lorry after getting out of a car on the M1 at Leicester, closing the motorway for five hours.

Police said the victim got out of a Renault Clio after stopping on the hard shoulder of the southbound carriageway between junctions 20 and 21.

He was hit by a Mercedes Benz HGV and pronounced dead at the scene.

The motorway was closed from about 14:00 BST on Tuesday causing severe tailbacks in and around Leicester.

The man is expected to be formally identified later.
