East Midlands Airport: 'Heavy snow' only threat

Services resumed on Friday at about 22:00 GMT after heavy snow caused disruption on Friday

East Midlands Airport has said only prolonged or heavy snow will affect its services.

Up to 5cms (2in) of snow was expected to fall in Leicestershire on Sunday afternoon.

The Met Office said a yellow warning for snow was in place, and the afternoon snow was set to be more persistent than the morning's flurries.

East Midlands Trains said it planned to operate a full service, but advised passengers to check before travelling.

"Significant accumulations" of snow were expected, particularly to the south of the county, the Met Office said.

About 20 flights in and out of the airport were cancelled or diverted on Friday night after heavy snow fell on the runway.

The airport said only prolonged snow, leaving them unable to keep the runway clear, would cause any trouble.

Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service warned people with dogs or children to be careful near frozen lakes, ponds and rivers.

Firefighters said they had to save a dog from freezing water this week after the ice gave way beneath it.
