Barwell factory fire: wind causes further blazes at site

The cause of the fire is still being investigated

High winds overnight have caused further fires to break out at the scene of a factory blaze in Leicestershire.

Fire crews were called to the printing works on Kingsfield Road in Barwell on Saturday afternoon.

Several roads were closed and residents in Barwell and Earl Shilton were advised to keep their windows shut as officers put the main fire out.

However, efforts to dampen down were held up after wind caused small fires to start among the debris.

Nearby residents were warned to keep windows and doors closed

Martin Ballard, from Leicestershire and Rutland Fire and Rescue Service, said King Street and George Street would remain closed on Monday.

He said: "The factory has collapsed. The second floor has dropped into the ground floor and there's a large amount of debris with hot spots all around the actual site itself.

"With the high winds that have occurred during the night, we've had a considerable amount of small fires being created by the debris itself which is difficult to access."

Mr Ballard said the warning for residents to keep windows shut was no longer in place and an investigation in to the cause of the fire was under way.
