A four-day revised timetable has been announced after a freight train derailed in Leicestershire.

Heavy rain was to blame for a landslip which caused the train, which was carrying stone, to tip over on Thursday in Barrow-on-Soar, Network Rail said.

East Midlands Trains (EMT) said Network Rail engineers needed track access to carry out repair works.

EMT said the amended timetable would run from Friday evening, and would include New Year's Eve.

It also said some early-morning departures would also be affected, including on New Year's Day.

Network Rail said a temporary road would have to be built across farmland and the embankment stabilised. About 270m of track needs to be repaired.

Saturated soil

The derailment happened at about 05:30 GMT on Thursday, leaving seven wagons on their side.

An EMT spokesperson said: "We would like to apologise to our passengers for any inconvenience this will cause.

"It is vitally important that Network Rail have full access to the line so that they can move the freight train and repair the damage."

EMT said full details of the timetable were available on its website.

A Network Rail spokesman said: "The soil is so saturated it can give way quite easily.

We've had incidents like this across the country; it's essentially down to the weather.

"This is a complicated recovery operation, but every effort will be made to limit disruption to passengers as much as possible."
