A Leicester school will be closed until further notice following a fire which caused 400 children to be evacuated.

The fire started at Catherine Junior School, in Brandon Street, at about 14:00 GMT.

Firefighters had to break their way into a sealed roof area to tackle the blaze.

More than 40 firefighters were tackling the flames at the height of the fire and people nearby were warned to keep their doors and windows closed.

Children were taken to safety at Catherine Infant School.

The cause of the fire is not yet known.

Vi Dempster, assistant city mayor, said: "This was a serious fire and school management acted quickly to evacuate all pupils and staff safely and without injury.

"We will now be working hard to to ensure that the pupils' ongoing education is not affected by this."

Leicester City Council has advised parents and carers to wait for further information about when their children should return, or whether alternative arrangements will be required.

City council building safety officers are working with the fire service to assess the damage caused to the building.
