Leicester's New Walk Museum is to receive £300,000 in improvements.

It is hoped the work to refurbish the museum and art gallery's main display areas will encourage more couples to book it for weddings.

Improvements will include better lighting, installation of a new public address system, general repairs and a widespread redecoration.

Arts Council England is contributing £150,000 to the refurbishment with the city council providing the rest.

The authority said its plans to increase number of private and corporate functions at the museum would be carefully thought out to avoid spoiling the facility for other visitors.

The building, on New Walk, opened in 1849 and attracted more than 258,000 visitors in the last financial year.
