Events across Leicestershire have had to be cancelled after the strongest storms in 30 years hit the county.

Buildings and roads were flooded, windows were smashed by giant hailstones and lightning damaged homes and businesses on Thursday afternoon.

The Foxton Locks Festival, the Market Bosworth Country Show, the Birstall Gala and Leicester's Race for Life have all been postponed or cancelled.

The Race for Life will now be held on 21 and 22 July.

In a statement, the Race for Life organisers said: "Due to the dreadful weather conditions at Leicester, we have made the decision to postpone both the Saturday and the Sunday Race for Life events.

"We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause."

Raw sewage

The organisers of the Birstall Gala made the decision to cancel the weekend's event after a sewer burst in Thursday's downpour, spewing raw sewage over the field and into the pavilion.

Water company Severn Trent said it would take several days to remove the sewage from the playing fields.

On Thursday, Leicestershire Fire and Rescue were called out to about 200 incidents in under four hours.

On Friday, the Met Office confirmed April to June this year had been the wettest second quarter in the UK since records began in 1910.
