New powers allowing Leicester City Council to fine drivers illegally using bus lanes have come into force.

The £60 penalties can now be issued by the authority as well as the police after it applied for permission from the Department of Transport.

The council is installing digital cameras along bus lanes and also has a mobile unit.

The new powers will initially be used at Causeway Lane and Charles Street and then rolled out across the city.

Warning notices will be handed out until 1 July with fines starting from 2 July.
