A Derby gym owner has been nominated for the Unsung Hero Award at this year's BBC East Midlands Sports Awards.

Ten years ago, Steve Pateman, who has dedicated 25 years of his life to coaching different sports, secured funding to transform an old building into Sumo's Gym.

Young people living in the area have the opportunity to use the facilities for free. Mr Pateman volunteers at the gym for about 40 hours a week.

Jackie Bates, who nominated Mr Pateman, said he not only helps keep children off the streets, but he "inspires them".

Mr Pateman, Mike Smith from Leicester and Julie Lowe from Nottinghamshire have been chosen for their unselfish and hard-working commitment to sport in their community.

The winner will be announced at the BBC East Midlands Sports Awards ceremony on Thursday.
