Leicester's Granby Street Gateway scheme, which the city council hopes will transform one of the busiest routes into the city, has been opened.

The £1.65m government-funded project has replaced a subway beneath Granby Street and Waterloo Way with a new road-level crossing.

Other improvements include resurfaced pavements, landscaping and lighting.

Granby Street has been narrowed to improve pedestrian access and a cycle lane replaces part of the ring road.

Councillor Abdul Osman from Leicester City Council said: "This scheme is designed to create a new, safer and more attractive gateway into Leicester from the station and London Road, and we are delighted with the result.

"We have worked to ensure that the transformation is complete before the busy Christmas shopping period begins."
