A man has appeared in court charged with the murder of a Leeds woman who vanished 14 years ago.

Gemma Simpson was 23 when she was last seen in the Harehills area of the city in May 2000, when she told a friend she was on her way to visit another friend in Huddersfield.

Martin Bell, 44, of St Leonard's Crescent, Scarborough, appeared before York Magistrates' Court.

Mr Bell was remanded in custody to appear at Leeds Crown Court on 15 July.

    08:33: East Coast franchise sale BBC Radio 4 Today

    "This was the best of the three bids," Transport Secretary Patrick McLoughlin tells the Today programme following the news that a Virgin-Stagecoach consortium will take over East Coast mainline.

    He adds the consortium, known as ICR, is offering an increase in the premium that will be paid to the government.

    He says services will also be improved - 23 more rail services will operate from Kings Cross.

    08:22: Delays in Bradford

    BBC Travel reports there's currently very heavy traffic on the A6177 Mayo Avenue in Bradford at the Staygate Roundabout junction.

    Drivers are being warned to expect delays in the area.

    08:13: East Coast rail winner announced

    Breaking news this morning is that a consortium made up of Stagecoach and Virgin has won the franchise to run the East Coast mainline rail route which serves West Yorkshire.

    The firms promised to invest £140m in the route over eight years, and will pay the government £3.3bn for the contract.

    The franchise, which runs through Leeds and Wakefield Westgate, has been publicly run since 2009.
