A memorial service for a teacher who was stabbed to death at school is to be held in September, Leeds City Council has said.

Ann Maguire, 61, was stabbed in front of her pupils at Corpus Christi Catholic College and died at Leeds General Infirmary on 28 April.

She had spent four decades teaching at the college and was due to retire.

The service in Leeds is to celebrate her life and "outstanding contribution" to education, the council said.

'Nurturing and supporting'

Keith Wakefield, the council leader, said: "Ann Maguire spent her whole career educating, nurturing and supporting generations of young people at Corpus Christi Catholic College.

"This public memorial service will give us all an opportunity to celebrate her life and her outstanding contribution to education in the city."

Monsignor John Wilson, of the Diocese of Leeds, said the service had been planned in conjunction with Mrs Maguire's family.

The Ann Maguire Arts Educational Fund has been set up in the teacher's memory to provide bursaries and funding for the personal development of people under 18 years old.

The service is to held at Leeds Town Hall on 29 September and further information about the service will be issued nearer the date, the council said.

A 15-year-old boy has been charged with Mrs Maguire's murder. He is due for a plea hearing at Leeds Crown Court on Friday.
