Leeds rugby league star Kevin Sinfield honoured by Queen

Kevin Sinfield Leeds Rhinos captain Kevin Sinfield becomes a MBE for services to rugby league

Leeds Rhinos captain Kevin Sinfield has been honoured by the Queen in her Birthday Honours list.

Sinfield, 33, who has played for the club since 1996, is appointed MBE for services to rugby league.

Other people honoured in West Yorkshire include the Reverend Canon Charles Dobbin from Leeds who is appointed MBE for services to community cohesion.

He chairs a number of groups working across different faiths in the county.

Also appointed MBE for services to the community is Bradford lawyer Sarah Khan-Bashir.

Mrs Bashir works with the Mosaic scheme, founded by Prince Charles, which provides mentoring and support for young people across the UK.

A school caretaker from Halifax, Barbara Brook, has received a British Empire Medal for services to education.

Mrs Brook, 55, has worked at the town's Lowerhouses Junior, Infant and Early Years School for more than 28 years.

The school has a high number of children with special needs and Mrs Brooks learnt sign language so she can communicate with the pupils.

    08:13: East Coast rail winner announced

    Breaking news this morning is that a consortium made up of Stagecoach and Virgin has won the franchise to run the East Coast mainline rail route which serves West Yorkshire.

    East Coast train

    The firms promised to invest £140m in the route over eight years, and will pay the government £3.3bn for the contract.

    The franchise, which runs through Leeds and Wakefield Westgate, has been publicly run since 2009.
