A 38-year-old man has died after being punched at a Halifax nightclub.

The man fell to the floor after being hit during an incident at the Maine Street nightclub, inside Liquid, in Commercial Street. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The attack happened at about 02.20 GMT on Sunday, West Yorkshire Police said.

It is believed the man who threw the punch may be unaware what happened to the victim, and officers have appealed for him to come forward.

'Single punch'

Det Chf Insp Nick Wallen said the dead man had been had been involved in an "exchange of words" with a group of men before being hit.

He said: "He was punched once and unfortunately, and tragically, he has fallen backwards, having been knocked unconscious, and has banged his head extremely hard on the concrete floor in the club.

"He has never regained consciousness and has been declared dead at the scene.

"We know the man who threw the punch threw only one punch and left the building very quickly afterwards.

"It is my belief that this man certainly would not have intended the outcome of what he did and would not be aware of the outcome of what he did when he left the night club."
