George Doulat George Doulat was jailed in his absence for 10 years for raping and sexually assaulting a woman

A rapist who went on the run before his trial but was later convicted in his absence and sentenced to 10 years has been captured in France.

George Doulat, 56, from Filey, in North Yorkshire, was arrested by police in Calais on Monday.

West Yorkshire Police said it was working to bring him to the UK.

Doulat did not attend his trial at Bradford Crown Court but was convicted of the rape, attempted rape and sexual assault of a 19-year-old woman in 2012.

The offences were committed in Bradford.

A spokesman for West Yorkshire Police said: "As a result of work with Interpol and the French Authorities, he was subsequently arrested on Monday night in Calais.

"Arrangements are currently being made for his return to face justice."

Originally from Bradford, Doulat had been living in Filey until he fled.
