Firefighters have been tackling a blaze at a water treatment works in West Yorkshire which sent a plume of black smoke into the sky.

A large amount of plastic in a disused tank caught fire at the Yorkshire Water plant on Smithies Lane, Heckmondwike, at about 19:00 BST.

Five crews were dealing with the fire, which caused traffic disruption.

A fire service spokesman said it had received a large amount of 999 calls from people who had seen the smoke.

Station commander David Teggart said: "The tank is full of plastic pellets but it's been disused for quite some time so there's no wet in there, the plastic has been very dry.

"The fire started, we believe, inside the tank and has effectively now consumed most of the tank and the tank has collapsed."

The cause of the fire is being investigated.
