About 200 elderly residents of six care homes in Leeds are to be consulted over plans to close them down, to save £875,000 a year.

Leeds City Council said they would be moved to alternative accommodation.

Three council owned care homes in the city have already been closed since December 2011, leading to 96 residents moving into privately-run homes.

The authority said it needs to save £55m in the next financial year. The consultation begins on Monday.

The six homes under threat of closure are Amberton Court, Burley Willows, Fairview, Manorfield House, Musgrave Court and Primrose Hill.

'Frail and fragile'

Celia Jones, who lives at Primrose Hill in Wetherby, told BBC Look North she is very worried about the plans.

She said: "Where are they going to put us? Because we don't know, we've no idea."

David Morton, from the Save Primrose Hill Care Home Campaign Group, said: "There are people here in their 80s, 90s, even 101. Now at that age, to have to be moved, is distressing for them, some of them are quite frail and fragile."

A report by the Labour-run authority said it would cost more than £10m over the next five years to maintain the care homes and bring them up-to-date.

Labour councillor Lucinda Yeadon said: "When you're wanting to change the way services are run so we meet changing needs and you're doing that with decreasing funds, that's very difficult.

"But within Leeds we've tried to protect adult social care as well as children's. Adult social care now makes up 32% of our total budget."
