West Yorkshire's Olympians honoured by the Queen

Olympic gold medallists, including Adams, Cockroft and Brownlee, have been honoured by the Queen

Three London 2012 gold medallists are among people from West Yorkshire recognised in the Queen's New Year Honours list.

Boxer Nicola Adams, wheelchair racer Hannah Cockroft and triathlete Alistair Brownlee have been appointed MBE for services to their sports.

Adams, 30, from Leeds, said: "I'm absolutely shocked and blown away.

"It's incredible to think I'm going to be a member of the British Empire, it's fantastic."

Adams, the first women's Olympic boxing champion, added: "It's the kind of thing that I used to watch on TV, people being honoured, and you never think for one second that it's actually going to be you."

One of the Brownlee brothers' coaches, Malcolm Brown, has been appointed MBE

Cockroft, 20, from Halifax, won two gold medals in the women's T34 100m and 200m wheelchair sprints.

Alistair Brownlee, 24, who also lives in Leeds, won the London 2012 triathlon and was joined on the podium by his brother Jonny, who claimed bronze.

Malcom Brown, who has coached the brothers for eight years and is the Olympic Performance Manager for British Triathlon, has also been honoured.

Mr Brown, from Leeds, has been appointed MBE for services to triathlon and the Games.

Other people from West Yorkshire recognised in the list include:

• Det Ch Supt Howard Crowther and temporary Assistant Chief Constable Ingrid Lee, of West Yorkshire Police, both awarded the Queen's Police Medal
• Ian Greenwood, former leader of Bradford City Council, appointed OBE for services to local government
• Colin Appleyard, from Keighley, appointed MBE for services to motorcycle sport
• Oliver Fenton, consultant plastic surgeon at Pinderfields General Hospital, Wakefield, appointed MBE for services to paediatric plastic surgery
• James Gundill, from Pontefract, appointed MBE for services to horseracing
• Joan Villiers, from Leeds, awarded the British Empire Medal for charitable services in Yorkshire and the Humber region through SportsAid and Heart Research UK
