Leeds cycle network opens route to Garforth

The council said it hoped the Olympics would provide a "great incentive"

A bike ride has been held along the fifth route of a Leeds cycle network to celebrate its official opening.

The new east Leeds cycle route leaves the city centre through Richmond Hill, Halton, Temple Newsam, Whitkirk and Colton before reaching Garforth.

The network aims to reduce traffic congestion and provide a safe way to get around the area.

Eventually a network is planned that will link 17 routes and cover 71 miles across Leeds.

The new route also gives access to Temple Newsam park and links with the Wyke Beck Way cycle path providing a direct route to Roundhay Park to the north.

'Great incentive'

Three others routes go from the city centre to Middleton, West Park and Alwoodley.

The first route was opened in September 2010.

Leeds City Council said it hoped the success of Great Britain's cyclists at the Olympics and Paralympics would provide a "great incentive" for people "to get back on their bikes".

The council said free training was available to encourage adults to ride bikes and to use the network to get around the city without having to cycle along the main traffic routes.
