Kenneth Bill found guilty for builder's murder

A man has been found guilty of murdering his former lover's husband and then burning his body on a bonfire.

John Hay, 61, a former police officer and builder from Fenay Bridge, West Yorkshire, went missing on 15 March. His body has never been found.

Kenneth Bill, 63, killed Mr Hay then tried to convince his family he had committed suicide, leaving his white van at the Humber Bridge, near Hull.

He is due to be sentenced at Bradford Crown Court on Friday.

Bill, of Upper Hagg Road, Holmfirth, West Yorkshire, posed as a potential customer of Mr Hay, who was a builder, then attacked him at an industrial unit in Meltham, near Huddersfield, before burning his body.

The court heard how Bill had a five-year relationship with Mr Hay's wife, Carol, 62, in the early 1970s.

She started to see him again last year but quickly realised this was a mistake, the court was told.

Prosecutors said the defendant became convinced this relationship could be rekindled if her husband was out of the way.

Det Ch Insp Lisa Griffin, from West Yorkshire Police, said: "He had planned this murder in meticulous detail, intending to dispose of all evidence in the hope that John Hay's family, friends and the police would believe that he had committed suicide by jumping off the Humber bridge.

"The family are devastated by their loss and now have to face a life ahead without the love and support of this very special man."
