White Rose Shopping Centre extension and cinema planned

The centre currently employs 3,500 people

Plans have been unveiled for a major expansion of a Leeds shopping centre which its owner says will create hundreds of jobs.

Land Securities wants to expand the 680,000 sq ft (63,174 sq m) White Rose Shopping Centre by a quarter.

A planning application for a cinema, four new restaurants and additional shops will be submitted to the city council later this year.

The plans include extensions to the existing Debenhams and Primark stores.

Gerald Jennings, Land Securities' portfolio director, said: "Since its opening in March 1997, White Rose has proved extremely successful, attracting up to 13 million shoppers a year and providing employment for thousands of local people.

"If our planning application is approved, it will enable the expansion of both stores, see the introduction of new catering outlets and the opening of the only cinema in south Leeds, which will be a valuable amenity for the local community."
