New upright MRI scanner opens in Leeds

An upright MRI scanner Patients can sit or stand in the new scanner

A new medical scanner developed to aid claustrophobic patients has opened in West Yorkshire.

The upright MRI scanner is in a private centre in Armley, Leeds, and can be used by private and NHS patients, bosses said.

It allows patients to be scanned sitting, lying down or standing.

Conventional MRI scanners use a "tunnel" in which patients are scanned lying down.

The Leeds Upright MRI Centre said all patients would require a referral from a healthcare professional to use the new scanner.
