No charges for Bridlington girls after injured mother hoax

Two 10-year-old girls who made a hoax 999 call which sparked a police search will not face criminal charges.

The girls, from Bridlington, pretended one of them was a three-year-old trapped at her Leeds home with her collapsed mother.

The call led to a police investigation which cost £3,000 and included a public appeal for help to trace the girl.

After considering the case, the Crown Prosecution Service decided no charges would be brought.

Behaviour 'challenged'

West Yorkshire Police said the girls were taking part in a programme which was "challenging their behaviour".

A spokesman said: "As part of that programme they are being taken to see emergency service call handlers to hear about the impact such calls have on the emergency services and the individual call handlers involved".

During the call to the ambulance service, which lasted 33 minutes, it was claimed that the caller's mother had fallen and could not get up.

The girl said she had shouted at her mother and wiggled her but she remained on the kitchen floor with a piece of toast in her hand, not moving.

The front and back door were locked and she could not get out of the house, she said.

The call could not at first be traced, but was later found to have been made in Bridlington.
