Two die in M62 motorway crash in West Yorkshire

Incident on the M62 between junction 25 and 26 The westbound carriageway on the M62 reopened at 16:50 BST.

Two people have been killed in a crash on the M62 in West Yorkshire.

Police said a lorry and an Audi collided at about 05:50 BST and the two occupants of the car, a man, 46, and a woman, 43, from Bishop Auckland, County Durham, died at the scene.

The westbound carriageway was closed between junction 26 Chain Bar and junction 25 at Brighouse for 11 hours, only re-opening at 16:50 BST.

At its height the incident caused about 10 miles of tailbacks on the motorway.

Police said they were investigating how the Mercedes lorry and white Audi A5 collided.

The driver of the HGV, a 43-year-old man from North East Lincolnshire, has been taken to hospital with minor injuries.

A number of surrounding roads are experiencing heavy delays as a result. Motorists are being advised to avoid the area.
