Six homes have been evacuated as firefighters tackle a gas mains fire in a south Leeds suburb.

The fire in Dewsbury Road, Beeston, was not expected to be extinguished until late on Friday night at the earliest, West Yorkshire Fire Service said.

The ring road at Beeston Park has been closed both ways between the A653 Dewsbury Road and Park Wood Road.

The fire service said it was using two "water curtains" to protect nearby property from the heat of the flames.

Meanwhile, engineers from United Utilities are working to isolate the site from the gas supply.
