People have been advised to avoid part of a south Leeds suburb following a large gas mains fire.

The fire in Dewsbury Road, Beeston, which started on Friday afternoon, has now been extinguished. Utility company workers remain at the site.

Police said the ring road at Beeston Park would be closed both ways between the A653 Dewsbury Road and Park Wood Road for much of the weekend.

Six homes were evacuated as a safety precaution until the fire was put out.

West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service used two "water curtains" to protect nearby property from the heat of the flames.

A Northern Gas Networks spokesman said: "The site is now safe and the residents who were evacuated as a precaution returned to their homes this morning.

"We have begun repairs to the gas mains and that will continue over the weekend. All gas supplies are back on."
