A Preston care home at the centre of an investigation into alleged mistreatment of residents is to close.

Briarwood Rest Home in Lostock Hall became the subject of police attention earlier this month.

A 63-year-old man from Preston was arrested on suspicion of neglect. A woman, 58, was held on suspicion of assault and a 41-year-old woman was arrested on suspicion of wounding.

Lancashire County Council confirmed the care home will close on Tuesday.

The three arrested people have all been released on bail pending further inquiries.

The council took the "unprecedented" step of placing its own staff into the private nursing home to help while the investigation continued.

'Serious allegations'

Steve Gross, executive director of adult services, said: "As the owners have told us that they want Briarwood to close by Tuesday 1 July, our first priority now is to help find suitable alternative accommodation for all of the residents at the home.

"We have allocated a social worker for each resident, and together with their families and our NHS colleagues, we are working hard to manage this difficult and sensitive process with the minimum of upset for everyone involved."

Det Insp Jes Holland, of Lancashire Police said: "These arrests are part of a thorough investigation into serious allegations of mistreatment of residents.

"The enquiry is complicated and is at a relatively early stage. We have a team of specialist detectives working on this case who are also offering support to those families who may have had loved ones identified as being allegedly mistreated."
