Driver, Jean Watson, dies in M55 crash near Kirkham

An 82-year-old woman has died following a three-car crash on the M55 motorway near Kirkham in Lancashire.

Jean Watson, from Horwich, Bolton, was driving a Hyundai Getz near to junction three of the eastbound carriageway at about 19:20 GMT on Thursday.

Her car was involved in a collision with a Ford Focus and a Vauxhall Zafira.

She was taken to the Royal Preston Hospital with serious injuries but died a short time later, police said.

A female passenger in Ms Watson's car, also in her 80s suffered a broken arm and other injuries.

The male driver of the Ford Focus suffered whiplash and shock-related injuries.

The road was closed for more than seven hours while police investigated. A force spokesman appealed for witnesses to contact officers.
