A woman has been jailed for killing her mother in Preston, Lancashire.

Ann Lupton, 54, of Cedar Avenue, Stoke-on-Trent, was sentenced to 16 months at Liverpool Crown Court.

She assaulted Marie Hothersall, 83, in Cottam, near Preston on 24 July. Ms Hothersall died at the Royal Preston Hospital two months later.

Following a post-mortem examination Lupton was charged with murder, but pleaded guilty to manslaughter earlier this month, police said.

Det Insp Kevin McLean said it was "an absolutely tragic case".

He said: "My thoughts are very much with Marie's family at this difficult time.

"I appreciate they will never be able to get over her death, but I can only hope that they can now begin to move forward with their lives."
